CELLO SONATAS
Seoyoen Min, CSO principal cello
Hsiao-Ling Lin, piano
Program:
BEETHOVEN: Cello Sonata No. 4 in C
This two movement sonata was composed just prior to his late piano sonatas. It’s typical of Beethoven’s late period, featuring deeply probing emotional expression and experiential difficulty.
GINASTERA: Pampeana, No.2
Named for the Argentine pampas, the three rhapsodic works evoke the low-lying plains of the composer’s country without quoting specific folk songs or dances. Written for his future second wife, a cellist, the second Pampeana begins with a cello proclamation related to the declamations in gaucho singing competitions.
GRIEG: Cello Sonata in A minor
This is Grieg’s only work for cello and piano, and contains themes from earlier compositions: a ‘Funeral March’ and a ‘Wedding March’. The work was dedicated to his brother John, an avid amateur cellist.
